What materials are the children's toys made of, specifically plastic toys?
Plastic toys are a large category of toys. There are many raw materials for plastic toys, such as ABS, PVC, PP, PC, PE, EVA, and PU. Below, I will explain each of them separately!
1. ABS
ABS is the main material for interlocking building blocks, and the three letters represent the substances 'acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene'.
The main reason for using ABS in interlocking building blocks is its good dimensional stability, allowing the basic particles produced to maintain a high degree of size consistency. At the same time, ABS has high hardness and toughness, and it does not become brittle even at low temperatures (low-temperature resistance -40°). Additionally, it is resistant to drops and wear.
In addition to interlocking building blocks, some model toys (such as Gundam, Transformers, plastic figurines, etc.), vehicle toys (inertia cars, electric cars, ride-on toys), and crawling plastic toys also use ABS to prevent breakage.
The CAT engineering vehicle, known in the industry as 'unbreakable', reportedly uses not ordinary ABS but engineering-grade ABS (this point needs verification):
2. PVC
PVC can be hard or soft. Hard PVC can be used for pipes, while soft PVC can be used for infusion tubes and slippers. In terms of plastic toys, PVC is the most commonly used material.
The vast majority of inflatable toys (except for balls) are made of PVC, such as hopper balls, bouncy horses, and balloons.
Animal models with a balanced soft and hard feel (within the category of children's toys) are also generally made of PVC, such as dinosaurs from Schleich and PAPO:
Hard PVC is relatively less used in toys. Toys made of PVC cannot be sterilized with boiling water; it is sufficient to disinfect them with toy cleaning agents or wipe them with a cloth dipped in soapy water.
3. PP
Compared to the above two materials, the advantage of PP is that it can be put in the microwave. Therefore, it is often used for containers to hold food, oils, seasonings, etc., such as lunch boxes and storage containers. After the ban on PC baby bottles a few years ago, PP became the main material for plastic baby bottles.
In toys, PP material is mainly used in small items like teething toys and rattles, as it is safe for oral use and can be sterilized by boiling in hot water.
4. PC
Before 2011, PC material baby bottles were popular across the country, but they are now banned. The reason for the ban is that PC material contains bisphenol A (BPA), which the EU believes can induce precocious puberty, disrupt endocrine function, and threaten the health of fetuses and children, leading to the ban.
Similarly, toys made of PC material may also contain bisphenol A. There are still similar toys on the market, but they are all very cheap.
5. PE
Soft PE is mainly used for film products, such as food wrap and plastic bags; the hard type is suitable for products made by single injection molding and hollow products.
